"Benji" reveals a Mark Kozelek dispelled. If "Ghosts of the Great Highway," "April," and "Admiral Fell Promises" were impressionist paintings, "Benji" is a black-and-white photo album. The subjects are portrayed in uncomfortable detail and the listener is a captive voyeur. This isn't a bad Sun Kil Moon album, just one depleted of the magic that had captured me in albums past.
